And just like that, we find ourselves as parents preparing for the first day of school—an exciting milestone for both parents and children alike! In Garland ISD, our first day of school is Monday, August 12, 2024. Ensuring that your child is prepared can help ease anxiety and set a positive tone for the rest of the school year. Here are ten essential tips to help you and your student get ready for that big day.

#1 Establish a Routine

Starting a week or two before school begins, establish a consistent bedtime and morning routine. This helps your child adjust to the school schedule and ensures they get enough rest.

Parenting Pro-Tip: Gradually adjust bedtimes and wake-up times to match the school schedule for a smoother transition.

#2 Organize School Supplies

Make sure your child has all the necessary school supplies. Check the school's supply list and go shopping together. Organizing supplies in advance helps your child feel prepared and excited.

Parenting Pro-Tip: Label your child’s supplies with their name to prevent mix-ups or loss.

  1. Visit the School
If possible, visit the school before the first day. Walk through the hallways, find the classrooms, and locate important places like the cafeteria and restrooms. Familiarity with the environment can reduce first-day jitters. Even if your child will be at the same campus as the year before, tour the school from the perspective of the new grade they will be in. There may still be new discoveries across the building that they weren’t aware of last year.
Parenting Pro-Tip: Attend any orientation sessions, such as Porch Party Night and Meet the Teacher, offered by the school to meet teachers and staff, and possibly drop off supplies.
  2. Review the Schedule
Go over your child’s daily schedule, including start and end times, class periods, and lunch breaks. Understanding the flow of the day helps them know what to expect and reduces anxiety. Become familiar with dates when parents can visit the campus for lunches and special events throughout the school year. Ensure you have registered at the campus through their visitor processing system and have been cleared to volunteer for events such as field trips.
Parenting Pro-Tip: Create a visual schedule for younger children to help them grasp the new routine.
  3. Plan Lunches and Snacks
Decide whether your child will bring lunch from home or buy it at school. Prepare and pack lunches and snacks the night before to save time in the morning.
Parenting Pro-Tip: Include healthy options and consider letting your child help pack their lunch to ensure they’ll eat what you pack.
  4. Choose the First Day Outfit
Let your child pick out their outfit for the first day of school. If their school requires a uniform, encourage your child to personalize their unique style with footwear and/or accessories! Choosing something comfortable and appropriate can boost their confidence.
Parenting Pro-Tip: Plan outfits or uniforms the night before and lay them out so your child can be self-sufficient the next morning.
  5. Talk About Expectations
Discuss what your child can expect on the first day, including meeting new teachers and classmates, classroom rules, and how to ask for help if they need it.
Parenting Pro-Tip: Role-play different scenarios your child might encounter, such as introducing themselves or finding their classroom.
  6. Set Goals Together
Encourage your child to set academic and personal goals for the school year. Setting goals helps them focus on what they want to achieve and provides motivation. Write the goals in a notebook or poster, and track their progress together on a weekly basis!
Parenting Pro-Tip: Keep the goals realistic and attainable to ensure your child remains encouraged and motivated.
  7. Prepare a Comfortable Backpack
Ensure your child’s backpack is comfortable and not too heavy. It should have enough space for books, supplies, and lunch, but not so much that it becomes a burden to carry.
Parenting Pro-Tip: Teach your child how to pack their backpack efficiently, placing heavier items closer to their back.
  8. Encourage a Positive Attitude
A positive mindset is crucial for a successful start to the school year. Encourage your child to think positively about new experiences and reassure them that it’s normal to feel a bit nervous.
Parenting Pro-Tip: Share positive stories from your own school experiences to help your child feel more excited and less anxious.

Preparing your child for the first day of school involves practical steps and emotional support. By establishing routines, organizing supplies, and fostering a positive attitude, you can help ensure your child’s first day is successful and enjoyable. Remember, your enthusiasm and encouragement play a vital role in setting the tone for a great school year. Here’s to a fantastic start to a new academic adventure!
