The start of a new school year can bring all kinds of feelings for students, whether it’s excitement, nervousness, and even a little worry. Students may wonder about their teachers, classmates, or how hard their classes will be. During this time, one of the most powerful things that can help a child feel ready and confident is their parent’s attitude.

When parents stay positive about going back to school, it helps set the tone for their child’s entire year. Kids often watch how adults react and learn from it. If a parent seems stressed or negative, a child might feel unsure or anxious. But if parents talk about school in an encouraging way by saying things like, “You’ve got this!” or “It’s going to be a great year”, children are more likely to feel calm and excited.

Being positive doesn’t mean pretending everything is easy or perfect. It means helping kids see the good in situations and reminding them that it’s okay to have tough days. It’s about teaching them that mistakes are part of learning and that every day is a chance to grow. When parents show this mindset, it becomes easier for kids to believe in themselves, too.

Here are a few simple ways parents can set a positive tone:

  • Talk about the good stuff – Ask what they’re looking forward to. Share stories about your own positive school memories.

  • Stick to routines – Having regular bedtimes and morning habits helps students feel safe and prepared.

  • Stay involved – Ask about their day, attend school events, and celebrate their small wins.

  • Use kind words – A simple “I’m proud of you” or “I noticed how hard you worked” can build confidence that lasts more than just a moment in time.

Even small actions like a smile at drop-off or packing a fun note in their lunch, these can show your child that school is something to look forward to. When parents lead with a positive attitude, students are more likely to start strong, stay motivated, and enjoy the journey.

Let your energy be the encouragement they need. A strong, happy start can lead to a successful and meaningful school year.
