Head Coach Chris Brown, who served as the assistant coach for the past two years and has been involved with the program since its start in GISD, has seen the sport grow from its first year as a UIL-sanctioned sport to the strong program it is today.
“It has been amazing to watch water polo develop from year one to now. Our returners have grown leaps and bounds,” said Brown.
Water polo demands strength, endurance, and focus. Practices start early, usually at 6 a.m., with students swimming for much of the session before moving to shooting, passing, and game skills. Many athletes join without prior water polo experience, learning the game as the season unfolds.
“We get kids with zero experience, and in a matter of days, they are playing full games. It is incredible to watch,” Coach Brown said.
All-district selections reflect both performance and commitment.
“Some students may not have scored the most goals, but they showed up every day, did what we asked, and earned this honor,” he said.
The season featured memorable moments, including early wins for the Sachse boys' team and remarkable first games for newcomers. Coach Brown recalls one Lakeview player who joined the team and played a full match on her first day, despite feeling nervous.
“She went in and played the game fully. That moment showed exactly what we hope students gain from water polo: confidence and perseverance,” he said.
Recognition also inspires new athletes to join.
“When they see themselves get recognized, it motivates them and helps recruit more students. Our athletes are our best advertisement,” Coach Brown said.
The growing program offers students across Garland ISD the opportunity to compete, build endurance, and represent their schools with pride. Looking ahead, Coach Brown aims to recruit more players and strengthen conditioning so teams can perform at their best.
Garland ISD continues to grow a strong water polo program that helps students strengthen their skills, build confidence, and thrive as teammates. This year’s all-district honorees reflect the program’s steady progress and bright future across the district.
