Garland ISD is proud to announce that Ashley Ross, a dynamic educator from Back Elementary, has been named the 2026 Region 10 Elementary Teacher of the Year.
Garland ISD is proud to announce that Ashley Ross, a dynamic educator from Back Elementary, has been named the 2026 Region 10 Elementary Teacher of the Year. This prestigious honor recognizes her outstanding dedication to teaching, her commitment to celebrating diversity, and the powerful influence she has on her students and community every day. As the Region 10 winner, Ashley is now in the running for Texas Teacher of the Year, competing alongside top educators from across the state.
“Ashley embodies everything positive about education for GISD and Region 10,” said Garland ISD Superintendent Dr. Ricardo López. “It is an honor to have her representing Garland ISD. She is a phenomenal example of excellence for teachers all across the state of Texas.”
Ross shared that the award feels like a dream come true and a powerful validation of her work. “It means so much to be seen and celebrated for doing what I love,” she said.
Ashley’s passion for teaching shines through when she talks about her role in her students’ lives.
“I have 24 children who look to me for everything,” she reflected. “They see me as a celebrity in their eyes. When you build that trust, they’ll do anything you ask. If I can inspire one person to try harder, to show more grace, to love a little better, I’ve done my job.”
Her classroom philosophy centers around a simple but powerful message: We are better together.
She shares a story about a book she reads with her students that uses the metaphor of a s’more—a white marshmallow, brown graham cracker, and chocolate—coming together to make something better.
“When someone makes a mistake, we help each other. We lift each other up,” Ashley explained.
Ashley’s journey to this prestigious award is marked by a deep love for teaching and a renewed sense of purpose. After spending several years in roles outside the classroom, she returned four years ago with fresh energy and a servant’s heart.
“These have been the best years of my career,” she said. “I’m walking in my purpose. I bring positivity every day, and positivity is contagious.”
That spirit of joy and connection was exactly what set Ashley apart during the selection process.
Region 10 Chief Communications Officer Rachel Frost shared, “The selection committee reviews every application carefully—this year, we had 121 strong candidates. They look for exceptional classroom instruction, creative lessons, and how teachers involve their communities. Ashley stood out because she brings a unique approach and deeply connects with her students and families.”
Frost added, “Region 10 covers a huge area with many school districts, so being named Teacher of the Year here means you’re truly among the best educators in Texas. It’s a high honor that opens doors to compete at the state level and become a leader in education.”
Ashley’s achievement shines a spotlight on Back Elementary and Garland ISD. The recognition has sparked pride throughout the community. As the Garland ISD Teacher of the Year, Ashley received a car wrapped in “GISD Teacher of the Year” branding from Rockwall Toyota, which has become a mobile symbol of her success and connection with the community. People stop her at gas stations and parking lots to talk when they see her driving. So many people wave, honk, and smile as she drives around.
In addition to this district honor and the car, Ashley’s Region 10 award includes exciting perks such as two tickets to the Texas Rangers game*, a monetary cash prize*, and two business class flights to anywhere in the country.**
Looking back on the journey, Ashley smiled as she recalled, “This win is for my school, my family, Garland ISD, and Region 10. The car sparks smiles and conversations wherever I go.”
Frost noted the award’s impact extends beyond recognition, saying, “Teachers who win often say it changes their perspective and renews their passion.”
She went on to explain how the winners join a community of passionate educators facing similar challenges, which provides support and inspiration.
Looking ahead, Ashley is ready to take on the next challenge with humility and enthusiasm.
Her advice to fellow educators and the community is heartfelt and clear: find what you love, do it with purpose, and surround yourself with positivity.
“You don’t have to do what everyone else does,” Ross said. “Positivity and passion can change everything. I hope to inspire educators who have stepped away to come back and rediscover their joy, and to encourage young teachers to keep that excitement alive throughout their careers.”
Ashley Ross is more than a Teacher of the Year. She is a beacon of positivity, a champion of diversity, and a living example of how teaching with love and purpose can change lives.
Garland ISD is honored to have her leading the way.
