Leadership GISD Cohort Takes on “Principal for a Day”
Leadership GISD cohort members stepped into the shoes of Garland ISD principals, exploring campuses across the district and gaining an inside look at leadership, programs, and student life.
The latest Leadership GISD cohort experienced what it takes to run a school during the program’s “Principal for a Day” session. They visited campuses across Garland ISD’s three cities, shadowing principals for about two hours, and gaining an in-depth perspective on how schools operate and the many people working behind the scenes to support both students and teachers.
From morning announcements to managing classroom dynamics, the group saw the complexity of campus operations in action. Many noted the sheer number of moving parts required to ensure a school runs smoothly, a reminder that every role on campus is vital to student success.
After the campus visits, participants traveled to the Gilbreath-Reed Center and Technical Center (GRCTC) for a luncheon, with the meal and a selection of desserts prepared by Culinary Arts students. Following the meal, cohort members reflected on their experiences.
“Today showed me where my help can truly be useful. It’s one thing to hear about challenges, but witnessing them up close gives us the knowledge to make a real difference,” shared Sharonda Green, who visited Keeley Elementary.
“I realized I’ve been missing out on so much of my community by not understanding what goes on in our schools. Seeing the programs and initiatives for students was inspiring, and now I want to get more involved. I even asked how I could become a volunteer,” said Jean Shortsleeve, who visited Beaver Technology Center for Math and Science.
“It was refreshing to see how happy and excited students and staff were to be at school. The culture on campus was so positive and very different from my own school experience,” said Moses Uvere, who visited Bussey Middle School.
Superintendent Dr. Ricardo López closed the session with a few words, reflecting on the district’s dedication to student success.
"Everything we do in Garland ISD is for our students. Our principals are leading their campuses to greatness. With 23 A-rated campuses, we continue to provide opportunities that set every child up for success and prepare them for college, careers, and life," said Dr. López.
The “Principal for a Day” session is part of Leadership GISD’s comprehensive program, which offers a behind-the-scenes view of district operations, challenges, and successes, building a deeper understanding of what makes Garland ISD unmatched.
