Garland ISD is bringing community leaders back into the heart of the district. After a pause during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Leadership GISD program has returned, giving parents, alumni, and local leaders an inside look at classrooms, district operations, and the programs that help students thrive.

The 2025–26 cohort launched in August with an orientation that provided participants with a broad overview of the district and its strategic objectives. Over the next several months, participants will attend six half-day sessions that showcase district operations and connect them with educators, administrators, and programs that shape student success.

“Leadership GISD is about creating a shared journey of learning and service,” said program coordinator and GISD Community Liaison Dr. Lakisha Culpepper. “This year’s participants were selected from an exceptional pool of applicants because of their demonstrated leadership, commitment to community engagement, and passion for supporting student success. The program will deepen their understanding of Garland ISD and strengthen their ability to be informed advocates and engaged partners in our shared mission."

The program highlights what it takes to serve more than 51,000 students across 68 campuses in Garland, Rowlett, and Sachse. Through campus visits, workshops, and hands-on activities, participants gain insight into district priorities, including safety, budgeting, talent development, and instructional innovation.

This year’s schedule includes unique experiences such as serving as “Principal for a Day,” engaging in a district-wide scavenger hunt, and exploring the non-instructional services that support teaching and learning. The program will conclude in March with a graduation ceremony celebrating participants’ commitment and growth.

Strengthening community ties
Leadership GISD builds lasting connections between the district and the community it serves. Participants represent a wide range of backgrounds, including parents, volunteers, alumni, business leaders, faith-based organizations, and nonprofit partners.

Graduates are recognized as GISD Ambassadors, equipped with the knowledge and relationships to serve on advisory committees, support district initiatives, and advocate for students in their communities.

With the program’s return, Garland ISD strengthens its commitment to transparency, collaboration, and empowering community leaders to support the future of public education.
