gifts on a table

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) joined forces with Garland ISD before the December winter break to bring joy to students at Bussey Middle School. This heartfelt initiative began when Lisa Dao-Walker, a former Garland ISD employee now working for TEA, reached out to Dr. Lisa Olsen and Dr. Lakisha Culpepper several weeks ago. Lisa shared that her Dallas-Fort Worth team wanted to adopt children for the holidays and suggested Garland ISD as this year’s focus.

Olsen noted, “We always look for opportunities to add an educational element for the kids. It’s important that they know their campus and district are here to support them, along with organizations like TEA.” This effort goes beyond just providing gifts—it’s about reinforcing students' sense of support from their school and community, fostering a lasting, positive impact on their lives. Additionally, Olsen emphasized, “The kids feel supported not just by their campus and district but also by a larger network of caring individuals who are invested in their future.”

Bussey Middle School’s principal, Amanda Ramos, worked closely with school counselors to identify students who would benefit most. Together, they selected students who had not yet been served by other programs, ensuring the holiday cheer reached those who needed it most. While it wasn’t possible to include everyone, the effort aimed to make a meaningful difference for those chosen.

Regional groups gather locally to celebrate as part of TEA’s holiday tradition. The Dallas-Fort Worth team, however, took this year’s festivities to the next level by partnering with Garland ISD. With the guidance of district officials, TEA collected students' names and collaborated to make holiday wishes come true, demonstrating the district’s unwavering commitment to its students.

“Our staff is encouraged to volunteer and connect with local school districts,” said Walker. “It’s not just about work—it’s about making a difference, and events like this bring that to life.” Seeing the direct joy they brought to the children for many TEA workers made this experience unforgettable.

The initiative also underscored the layers of support surrounding students. From librarians and counselors to teachers, administrators, and district representatives, students were reminded of the many people invested in their success.

The event brought smiles and gratitude from students and organizers. “Getting to connect directly with the kids and seeing the smiles on their faces—that’s what the holidays are all about,” said Walker.

Through this collaboration, TEA and Garland ISD celebrated the season and demonstrated the profound impact of community-driven compassion and support.
