Jon Greuel
Garland ISD is proud to present the Garland ISD' Going the Extra Mile' award to Jon Greuel, a remarkable welding instructor at South Garland High School.
Under Jon's leadership, the school has made significant strides in promoting gender equity in its welding program. His efforts began in response to a call from President Griffin back in 2017 for more female representation in the field, leading to the creation of the Welding Student Chapter. This initiative, an affiliate of the American Welding Society (AWS), offers leadership training and practical experiences, specifically empowering female students.
Thanks to Jon's dedication, the program now boasts improved facilities and custom-fitted welding gear for female students, enhancing their comfort and safety. His successful grant applications through GEF have further supported these endeavors. The impact of his work is evident in the notable increase in female student participation, with 29 currently enrolled, and the addition of Ms. Aurora Sandoval, a Hispanic, Spanish-speaking female instructor, to the team. The welding program has seen a 10% increase in female enrollment from last year.
Jon Greuel's commitment to creating an inclusive and diverse welding environment at South Garland High School embodies the spirit of the GEM award.
