The goal of a coordinated school health program is to improve each student's physical, social, emotional and educational development by integrating health education, physical education and activity, nutrition services and parental involvement.

Garland ISD has chosen CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) as our coordinated school health program.

The Health and Physical Education Department leads our coordinated school health initiative but the program's success relies on the following departments working together at the district and campus level:

    Student Health Advisory Council (SHAC)

The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) assists the district in ensuring that local community values are reflected in the Coordinated School Health model. The council will address topics related to health education, physical education, health services, nutrition services, social and emotional learning, counseling, healthy school environment, staff health promotion and family/community involvement.

The SHAC is made up of parents, district staff, and community members appointed by the district. These members provide recommendations to the GISD Board of Trustees on coordinated school health programming and its impact on student health and learning.  The SHAC will assist the district in ensuring that local community values are reflected in the district’s health education instruction. The SHAC provides an efficient, effective structure for recommending age-appropriate, sequential health education programs, and early intervention and prevention strategies that can easily be supported by local families and community stakeholders.

    SHAC laws

Every independent school system is required by law to have a School District Health Advisory Council of which the majority of members must be parents who are not employed by the school district.  See Title 2, Chapter 28, Section 28.004 of the Texas Education Code.

    Interested in joining SHAC?

The Garland ISD School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is seeking new members. Parents and community members play a vital role in the district-wide implementation of our coordinated school health program.
