GISD Board calls for Nov. Prop A election

If passed, Proposition A is projected to provide about $56 million in additional funds annually for teacher and staff salaries, student programs, specialized education services and safety and security.

If approved, Proposition A is projected to generate up to $33 million in additional operational revenue for teacher and staff retention. This page explains how those funds could be allocated for employees not covered by House Bill 2 (HB2).

Salary increases for all GISD employees

Recent state legislation, House Bill 2 (HB2), provides funding for pay increases only for teachers with 3 or more years of experience, meaning approximately 25% of GISD early-career teachers (0–2 years) receive no increase from this bill.

Prop A would allow GISD to provide pay increases for the remaining 4,500 support staff and new teachers not impacted by HB2.

Teacher salary comparison

Garland ISD competes with neighboring districts for teachers. Many of these districts have increased teacher pay, while the average teacher salary in Garland ISD is below the market average.

If approved, Prop A could raise teacher salaries to the market average and help attract and retain teachers.

School DistrictStarting Teacher Salary
Arlington ISD$66,100
Dallas ISD$65,000
Richardson ISD$63,000
Plano ISD$63,000
Grand Prairie ISD$63,000
Forney ISD$62,200
Wylie ISD$62,070
Mesquite ISD$62,000
Frisco ISD$62,000
Garland ISD$61,500
Rockwall ISD$60,500

Bus drivers

Garland ISD competes with other local districts and businesses for bus drivers.

More than 18,000 students rely on 275 bus routes to get to school each day.  GISD had 21 unfilled routes and vacancies last year.

Prop A could allow Garland ISD to remain competitive in hiring and retaining bus drivers.

Staffing for new agriculture facility

Garland ISD voters recently approved bond funding for a new ag facility to meet the growing student demand.

Without additional funding, the district may not have the funds to staff the facility to its full capacity, meaning a high percentage of students could be turned away.

Prop A could allow more students to participate in the ag program.
