Key things to know about this choice period
What's new?
Many things will be different with the choice and magnet application process this year. Here are some new terms to know.
- Avela - Application system for combined Choice of School form that includes magnet programs. It's phone- and text-friendly. The link and login information will be emailed to the student's primary guardian in January.
- Single Best Offer - Students will be given one school placement offer. There is no need to accept/decline a seat placement. Students will remain on the waitlist for any schools that were higher-ranked choices.
- Ranking - Choose up to 6 schools/magnet programs in preference order. The order impacts the lottery and waitlists.
See the table below for a summary of all changes.
Differences between old and new process
Old Process | New Process for 2025-26 |
---|---|
Application in Skyward | Application in Avela |
Separate magnet application and application window | Combined: Choice of School Form which includes magnet programs |
# of programs/# of schools | Select between 3 and 6 schools/magnet programs mixed on the same form |
Removal of “continue in current program, hold and apply, exit and apply, exit” options | Rank order only |
Magnet results in February with an accept/reject option | Choice results will go out in March. This is a Single Best Offer based on the preferences you chose. |
If you accepted a magnet seat, you were done with the process and lost any waitlist numbers you had. | If you did not get your first choice, you will automatically be placed on the waitlist for the programs you qualify for above your placement. |
Automatic continuation (affecting current magnet students at Austin, Brandenburg, Jackson & Sellers) | Priority Continuation |
ECHS at five high schools | ECHS at all seven high schools with a change to Transportation |
What to expect in Avela
The link and login information will be emailed to the primary guardian for students in January.
(Note: Email addresses and phone numbers can be updated in Skyward. You must visit the school to change guardian status or address (proof of residency is required).
- You will have the opportunity to select and rank up to six (6) schools and/or magnet programs.
- Carefully consider your order of preference, as this information is used in the lottery and impacts waitlists.
- Always rank your schools/magnet programs by listing them in the order you prefer them, even if you are applying to very high-demand or magnet schools. You should always list schools by their true preference.
- You can choose a mix of non-magnet and magnet options. Each magnet school will have two choices, because they have magnet and non-magnet seats at the school.
- Magnet programs are listed by program, Choice of School options (non-magnet) are listed by campus name. For example:
- “Beaver Technology Center for Math and Science Non-Magnet” is a Choice of School selection for a non-magnet seat
- “Beaver Technology Center for Math and Science Magnet Program is a Magnet Program selection for a magnet seat. (Note: You will only see the campus for which you are zoned for elementary magnet programs with more than one school. Zoning is based on address.)
- Magnet programs are listed by program, Choice of School options (non-magnet) are listed by campus name. For example:
- You can update your preferences until the deadline.
- Include at least one non-magnet school.
- Your top choice is not guaranteed. If offered your top, you won't be waitlisted for others. Important: If not offered your top, you'll be waitlisted for higher-ranked schools if you meet qualifications.
Factors to consider before finalizing your choices
Expand AllResearch all of your options
Parents are encouraged to carefully explore the options for schools and magnet programs. You will be asked to list up to 6 schools or magnet programs in priority order. You will want to check qualifications for magnet programs and consider transportation before determining your final preferences.
See the Tips to Help You Choose page for resources to help you find the best fit.
Change for current magnet students in transition years
For students who will be transitioning from 5th to 6th grade or 8th to 9th grade. Automatic Continuation no longer applies. Instead, Priority Continuation will be used to determine placement.
- These options are no longer available: “continue in current program, hold and apply, exit and apply, exit”
- Be sure to put your choices in rank (priority) order.
- Check qualifications for magnet programs online at garlandisd.net/magnets.
- If your student meets the qualifications and you put it as #1, you have priority continuation. You will get this seat.
- If your student does not meet the qualifications, a committee at your current middle school will complete a rubric to determine if your student will be eligible for continuation.
Transportation considerations
Parents choose the school they want their children to attend during the Choice of School process, but transportation to the school you choose is not guaranteed. The factors that determine bus transportation are:
- designated transportation eligibility area(s) for each school
- magnet program acceptance
- resides within the transportation zone for the assigned campus
Accepted alternate addresses, such as grandparents or a licensed childcare facility, must also fall within the eligible transportation zone for the assigned campus.
Transportation is provided for eligible home addresses. You can check your address at www.explore.garlandisd.net to see your zoned campuses.
Transportation eligibility maps are available:
- online at the GISD Explore Map
- at each campus
- at the Harris Hill Administration Building
- at the Manuel & Maria Valle Student Services Center
Transportation registration is mandatory and will open in March and close June 1st.
Transportation for magnet students
- For elementary programs that are at multiple schools (Academy, Montessori, MST), the district is divided into zones. You can check your address at www.explore.garlandisd.net to see your elementary-zoned schools. You may receive transportation to your zoned magnet campus based on your current home address if residing within the designated transportation zone for the campus of attendance.
- For middle and high school programs (except ECHS), you may receive transportation to your zoned magnet campus based on your current home address if residing within the designated transportation zone for the campus of attendance.
- For students in the high school ECHS program, transportation may only be given to students who live within the ECHS transportation area of their home campus.
What happens after the Choice Period ends?
Once all of the choices are processed through the lottery, parents will receive the Single Best Offer notification via email. There will be no need to accept/decline a seat placement. If that offer matches your highest priority choice, that will be your seat placement. If that offer was not your first choice, no action is needed. Students will automatically be placed on the waitlist for any schools that were higher-ranked choices.
Single Best Offers for the 2025-26 year are expected to go out March 7, 2025.
Application lottery and waitlist information
Expand AllHow does the lottery work?
The lottery determines placement for each applicant by considering the following factors:
- the schools/magnet programs selected
- the way the applicant ranked their school preferences in the application
- the number of seats available at each school/magnet program for that grade
- the applicant’s test scores for any magnet programs selected
- the applicant’s priority level for that school/program
- The District has determined the following priority groups for magnet placement:
- Siblings of students enrolled at or receiving an offer for the same magnet program (must meet qualification criteria for magnet program)
- Children of an employee that works at the same school as the desired magnet program (must meet qualification criteria for magnet program)
- Academy of Excellence does not have sibling or employee priority
- The District has determined the following priority groups for non-magnet placement:
- Siblings
- How close the applicants live to their choice
- The District has determined the following priority groups for magnet placement:
Applicants are considered in order of priority group and random lottery number. They may receive an offer for their highest-ranked school that has space or for which they qualify. If the applicant is not matched to their first choice, the system keeps them on the waitlist of the family’s higher-ranked schools.
Each applicant may select up to six (6) Choice Schools or Programs on their application and will be asked to rank each selection in order of preference. The lottery will try to give each applicant one offer only to the school that they ranked the highest, are eligible to attend, and that has available seats.
If you apply for more than one school/program during the application window, you may receive an offer to your first-choice school or to a lower-ranked choice. Your application will be placed on the waitlist for any school(s) that you ranked higher, but not for schools that you ranked lower.
Example 1: Tammy selects the schools below for her application and ranks them in this order:
#1 (her highest-ranked preference) – Abbett Elementary
#2 – Armstrong Elementary
#3 – Beaver Math, Science & Technology magnet program
#4 – Walnut Glen Academy for Excellence magnet program
#5 (her lowest-rank preference) – Shorehaven Elementary
- The lottery is able to offer her a seat at her third-ranked choice: Beaver Math, Science & Technology magnet program. As a result:
- The student will be placed on the waitlist for her #1 and #2 choices, Abbett and Armstrong, because she indicated that she preferred those schools more than the school offered to her. This means that if a seat becomes available at either of those schools, she may receive an offer from the waitlist.
BUT
- The student will not be placed on the waitlist for her #4 and #5 choices (Academy for Excellence and Shorehaven) because she indicated that she preferred the school that gave her an offer more than these schools. This means that she is no longer eligible for a seat offer at these schools.
Example 2: Audrey selects the schools below for her application and ranks them in this order:
#1 (her highest-ranked preference) – Watson Math, Science & Technology magnet program
#2 – Kimberlin Academy for Excellence magnet program
#3 – Vial Classical Magnet Program
#4 – Keeley
#5 (her lowest-rank preference) – Liberty Grove
The lottery is able to offer her a seat at her third-ranked choice, Classical magnet program at Vial. As a result:
- Since her choice 1 and 2 are magnet programs, she must meet the test score qualifications. Since her scores did not meet the requirement for choice 1 or choice 2, her application will NOT be placed on the waitlist for her #1 and #2 choices
How does the waitlist work?
- Waitlists are generated every year, and new waitlist numbers are assigned. They do not carry over from one year to the next.
- Waitlists are generated by the system when the lottery is conducted. After applications are sorted according to the lottery priority structure and their randomized lottery number, the applications at the top receive offers for available seats.
- Applications that do not receive an offer through the lottery are placed on waitlists in the following way:
- If an applicant DOES receive an offer to their highest-ranked school, they will NOT be placed on a waitlist for their other school choices.
- If an applicant does NOT receive an offer to their highest-ranked school, they WILL be placed on the waitlist for their higher-ranked schools.
For example, if Jose applies to 3 schools and receives an offer for the school he ranked as his #2 preference, then his application would remain on the waitlist for the school he ranked as his #1 preference, but not for the school he ranked as #3.
Offers from Waitlists
- Offers from waitlists typically begin 2-3 weeks after the lottery.
- Offers from waitlists continue throughout the spring, summer, and into the first weeks of the new school year – as long as seats are available.
- You will be notified if you receive a seat offer from the waitlist. The message will tell you which child and school/program the offer is for, as well as the deadline to accept the offer.
- You can view your waitlist status in your Avela account
