The front of NGHS with an AVID banner

North Garland High School, located in Garland ISD, has been revalidated as an AVID National Demonstration Campus for the next three years. Being a National Demonstration Campus means that NGHS is a world-recognized learning center whose systems, leadership, instruction, and culture are based on high expectations and activating students' lives beyond the twelfth grade. Only two percent of AVID campuses in the world hold this distinction.

Three of our schools in GISD have earned this distinctive title, including North Garland High School, O'Bannion Middle School and Sellers Middle School. This further AVID recognition is an outstanding achievement for NGHS.

"We are so excited to have the amazing work of our teachers and students recognized by AVID as a model for other schools to follow! As one of only about 4% of AVID schools worldwide to have this distinction, we are incredibly proud that our systems, instruction, leadership, and culture promote college readiness for ALL students at an elite level," says Michael Arreola, Garland High School Principal.

Advancement Via Individual Determination, or AVID, campuses are in 47 states across the U.S., with educators driving student success through engaging, rigorous, and student-centered learning environments. GISD and NGHS use the program to bring out the best in students and close the achievement gap. GISD's goal with AVID is to prepare students for college and success in a global society.

AVID offers various classroom activities, lesson plans, professional learning videos, and timely articles relevant to students. These tools help educators implement and refine instructional practices. AVID also helps educators deliver the critical academic, and social supports students need to succeed.

"Our AVID Coordinators, Ms. April Aston and Ms. Anne Rojas have worked tirelessly to ensure that our school promotes rigor and high expectations for all students, not only AVID students. Our students should be proud that they have maintained a robust AVID culture throughout our school through these challenging times," said Arreola.

At NGHS, AVID is an elective where students excel. Students in the class will graduate high school ready for college, a career or the military. Students at NGHS are required to take an advanced level class every semester to prepare them for the challenges of college.

GISD students must apply to be placed in the AVID elective and interviewed by the school's AVID team. They must sign a contract indicating their desire and determination to go to college.
