GISD Opens First New Elementary Playgrounds
Elementary students will enjoy safe, accessible, and fun new playgrounds made possible by the 2023 bond.
Garland ISD celebrated the grand opening of its first playgrounds from the 2023 Bond on September 9 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Sewell Elementary. Afterward, students were the first to explore their new recess spaces, and their excitement was evident as they tried the swings, ladders, and other play equipment.
Each elementary school will feature two ADA-accessible playgrounds, one for younger students and one for older students, each equipped with canopies. The shaded areas provide a safer, cooler, and more enjoyable recess experience, allowing students to play longer while staying protected from the Texas sun.
A notable upgrade is the replacement of wood chips with an ADA-compliant surface that is safer, cleaner, and more durable. The surface features a low pile height for easier wheelchair access and is equipped with built-in antistatic technology, creating a safe environment for children with cochlear implants.
The new surface is built to last and will remain functional for years. With no loose wood chips, the area stays clean and tidy, while antimicrobial properties help prevent bacteria and mildew. These improvements make recess safer, more inclusive, and reduce maintenance needs and costs for the district.
These playgrounds are the first of many improvements funded by the 2023 bond, approved by voters as an investment in the future of Garland ISD students. The upgrades create modern, accessible, and low-maintenance play spaces that enhance recess, encourage active play, and create lasting memories.
Construction continues at additional campuses, with more playgrounds to open in the months ahead. Once complete, every school will enjoy safe, inclusive, and exciting play areas.
