2024 AP CSP Female Diversity Award

Garland ISD is making strides in STEM education, with Garland High School and Lakeview Centennial High School earning the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award from The College Board for the 2023-2024 school year.

This prestigious recognition is awarded to schools leading the way in closing the gender gap in computer science, achieving either 50% or higher female exam taker representation in AP Computer Science courses or a percentage that meets or exceeds their school’s female population, according to the organization.

At Garland High School, AP Computer Science teacher Kristol Smith was recognized by the AP Program for creating an environment where female students feel encouraged to take on the world of technology. Along with the efforts of Lakeview Centennial High School, these campuses are expanding access to AP computer science courses, opening doors to careers in coding, engineering, cybersecurity, and beyond.

According to the College Board, providing female students access to computer science courses is crucial to ensure they’re prepared for technology jobs, where they can drive innovation and creativity in the field. Research shows that women are more likely to pursue computer science in college when given the opportunity to explore it in high school.

This recognition is part of a nationwide commitment to increasing female participation in computer science, preparing students for in-demand careers, and equipping them to tackle some of society’s most pressing challenges. With more young women stepping into tech, Garland ISD ensures its students are ready to innovate, lead, and shape the future.

Garland ISD continues to set the standard for excellence and inclusion in STEM, proving once again why it is unmatched. Congratulations to these schools and educators for making a lasting impact!
