The district is implementing a campus consolidation plan for the 2024-25 school year. Starting in the fall, students who have been at the Freeman Elementary campus on W. Walnut Street will attend school at the Golden Meadows Elementary campus at 1726 Travis Street.

School name, colors and mascot

Quick Facts for 2024-25:

  • School name: B.H. Freeman at Golden Meadows Elementary
  • Mascot: Hawks
  • Colors: Red & Black
  • Principal: Cecilia Bados

While the new Freeman campus is being built,  students from both schools will be housed at the Golden Meadows location. During this time, the school will be named “B.H. Freeman at Golden Meadows Elementary.”

Once the new building is complete, the Golden Meadows name will be retired and the combined student body will become students at the new B.H. Freeman Elementary.

Freeman’s history began in 1949 as one of the first elementary schools in Garland ISD. The Golden Meadows name was based on the local neighborhood.

Culture and traditions

An essential part of this change is honoring the past while celebrating new opportunities and forming new combined campus cultures. Each campus has a unique and special history with achievements to be respected. District staff will collect Freeman artifacts such as trophies and plaques and move them to Golden Meadows. Once the new building is complete, all artifacts from both campuses will be relocated to the new campus.

Dress code

Students at the combined school will continue to attend school in standardized dress.

Plans for the buildings

A new elementary building will be constructed at the current Freeman location on W. Walnut Street. This new construction was approved by voters during the 2023 Bond election. When the building is complete, the school will open as Freeman Elementary and all students will move to the new state-of-the-art facility. We anticipate the school will open for the 2026-27 school year.

The building that was formally Golden Meadows will be left empty once the new school is open. Plans for the future of the building have not yet been determined.

See the map below for the location of Freeman in comparison to Golden Meadows. The distance between the two schools is 1.1 miles.
