Today, we recognize the courage that turned a potentially disastrous incident into a testament to vigilance and quick thinking. A story that reminds us of the heroism that exists in everyday life.

Our very own Garland ISD bus driver, Reva Douglas, rose to the occasion when one of our young students was faced with a threatening situation. This is why we honor her as one of the July GISD 2023 GEM’s.

It was the morning of May 18th, a day that started like any other, but as Reva approached her middle school stop near Cherokee Rose Trail and Westbank Trail, she noticed something amiss.

As she arrived, she saw a terrified student rushing toward the safety of the bus. The young girl reported a strange man had been attempting to coax her into his car. Reva, sensing something was wrong, quickly took decisive action.

Reva recalls, 'There's a camera on the front of the bus, and I positioned the bus so that the camera could get the rear license plate, and that's when he sped off.' Reva secured a snapshot of the man's license plate, which she promptly reported to the police.

It was later discovered that this man was a suspect in a case in Richardson. Thanks to Reva's quick thinking, he was apprehended. Reva's prompt response thwarted a potential disaster, preserving the safety of a student under her care.

A humble hero of 16 years with the district, Reva regards her students as more than just passengers; they are an integral part of her life. Reva, in appreciation for your brave actions and recognition of your unwavering dedication, we present you with the GISD Evidence of Excellence Award.

Thank you, Reva, for reminding us that our heroes often wear the uniform of everyday life and embodying the spirit of care and vigilance we hold dear in Garland ISD.
