Semester Exams Cancellation for Secondary Schools
Expand AllWhy are the remaining semester exams being canceled?
Due to the recent severe storms and subsequent school closures, it has been decided to cancel all remaining semester exams for the end of the school year to ensure the safety and well-being of all students and staff.
How will my final semester grade be calculated without the exams?
Student averages will follow EIA Regulation, which states, “an average of both cycle grades within a semester will be used to calculate semester grade when semester exams are not given". Therefore, your grades will be finalized by averaging your cycle 3 and cycle 4 grades to comprise your final semester average.
Where can I find more information about the grading regulations?
All of the grading regulations can be found on the Grades and Grade Point Average page.
What if I have concerns about my grades due to the cancellation of exams?
If you have any concerns about your grades, please contact your teacher or school administration for further assistance.
Will this decision affect my GPA?
The calculation of your GPA will follow the same guidelines as it would have if semester exams were given, with your semester grades being the average of cycle 3 and cycle 4 grades.
How does this decision impact seniors and graduation?
Seniors will have their final semester grades calculated the same way, ensuring that their GPA and academic records are complete for graduation. Any specific concerns for seniors should be directed to their school counselor.
Are there any additional resources or support available for students during this time?
Yes, if you need additional support or resources, please reach out to your school’s administration or continue checking the Garland ISD website for more information.
How can I stay updated with further announcements?
We will continue to communicate any additional updates via our usual channels, including email, the district website, and social media platforms. Please ensure your contact information is up-to-date with your school.

Additional Information
Expand AllHow will Elementary/Middle School Graduations, PreK-11 Celebrations, and End of Year events be handled?
As you are aware, our communities have recently experienced significant disruptions due to power outages and damages, resulting in the closure of our schools.
In light of these circumstances and the impact they have had on our school district, we regret to inform you that we will not be able to conduct awards or graduation ceremonies for students in Pre-Kindergarten through 11th grades this year. We understand that this news may be disappointing, especially for our students who have worked hard throughout the year and were looking forward to these special events.
Please know that this decision was not made lightly, and our primary concern remains the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community members. The challenges posed by the recent closures have made it impractical for all GISD campuses to proceed with traditional ceremonies at this time.
How and where can families drop off student technology?
Campuses are communicating that information through callouts and social media.
How can my child pick up personal items, medicines, and supplies left on campus?
Campuses are communicating that information through callouts and social media.
Will Summer School operate as usual?
Summer school in GISD will operate as normal. Campuses and/or the district will communicate as changes are needed for individual students.
What communication sources will be used to communicate with parents?
At this time, with many families, including teachers, not having access to power, please follow communication from district sources, which include Skylert, the district website, district social media, and phone calls from the district. Your principal could also be contacting you in the future.
Messages may have been scheduled before the storm to inform you about school operations, but please understand that these messages might not be able to be turned off during power outages or when cell phone reception is weak. We are working diligently to address this issue and appreciate your patience and cooperation during this time. Thank you.
