Emergent Bilingual (EB) students, families and school staff have access to social work services in Garland ISD. Our district works with a licensed mental health provider who:

  • Introduces students and families to formal and informal community and school resources
  • Connects families to the EB program, which helps students learn and adjust to school
  • Makes plans for the schools, students, and parents with other staff district-wide
  • Helps provide evidence-based behavioral, social-emotional and mental health services

Students

  • Provide crisis intervention
  • Develop plans for improving academic success
  • Assist with conflict resolution and anger management
  • Help students develop social skills
  • Build the student's understanding of self and others
  • Identify barriers to learning in the home, school or community and help reduce them

Families

  • Meet with the family to discuss concerns affecting the student’s education
  • Support parents as they help their student adjust to school 
  • Reduce family stress to allow the student to thrive in and outside of school 
  • Connect parents to programs available to students with special needs
  • Help parents use school and community resources

Staff and teachers

  • Help staff understand the factors that affect student performance and behavior (such as cultural, societal, economic, familial, health, etc.)  
  • Assess students with mental health concerns
  • Provide direct support to staff
  • Help staff to meet the education goals of diverse learners
  • Connect teachers to or provide them with the resources they need
