Summer Reading
Learn about reading during the summer break and district reading initiatives.
Reading is key to all students' academic success and is also important for students entering advanced classes with in-depth literary analysis. Reading over the summer can help students maintain and increase their reading comprehension skills and prevent the summer slide.
Some campuses prepare a list of required or recommended reading assignments. Check your school website for campus-specific requirements.
Summer 2023 Reading Challenge
GISD Students are invited to travel the solar system as part of the "Be a Reading STAR!" Summer Reading Challenge from May 29-Aug. 8.
Students and campuses with the most minutes read will earn prizes. You may read a physical book, myON or any digital book. Learn more on the Summer Reading 2023 website.
Be sure to log your minutes at the end of the summer using the Summer Reading Log form to be entered into the challenge.
We have also created several space-themed activities for your family to pair with reading over the summer. See the Family Activities page and the STEAM Activities page for more information.
Where to get books
There are several ways you can get books to read:
- Use myON for a collection of thousands of free digital books (see our myON page and myON Books page).
- Meet our Reading with Rodney Mobile Library at one of its many stops during the summer.
- Visit a local library:
Literacy for Life
Garland ISD has launched a Literacy for Life initiative in an effort to encourage everyone in the community to read. To offer added resources and increase reading engagement, GISD has partnered with Renaissance® to provide access to myON®, a digital library.
