Summer Reading
Learn about reading during the summer break and district reading initiatives.
Reading is key to all students' academic success and is also important for students entering advanced classes with in-depth literary analysis. Reading over the summer can help students maintain and increase their reading comprehension skills and prevent the summer slide.
Some campuses prepare a list of required or recommended reading assignments. Check your school website for campus-specific requirements.

Summer 2025 Reading Challenge
Be a star! Students are invited to experience the red carpet by participating in the 2025 Summer Reading Challenge from May 26-Aug. 8.
Follow weekly activities on the Summer Reading 2025 website to keep the fun going throughout the summer.
Be sure to log your minutes by the end of summer! Use the Summer "Bingo" Reading Log printable form to be entered into the challenge. Reading log bingo sheets are due to any GISD School Librarian on August 15.

Where to get books
There are several ways you can get books to read:
- Use myON for a collection of thousands of free digital books (see our myON page and myON Books page).
- Meet our Reading with Rodney Mobile Library at one of its many stops during the summer.
- Visit a local library:

Literacy for Life
Garland ISD has launched a Literacy for Life initiative in an effort to encourage everyone in the community to read. To offer added resources and increase reading engagement, GISD has partnered with Renaissance® to provide access to myON®, a digital library.
